I leave for London today. Will be around until May 26th. Then three days in Paris. Back in Auckland June 2. If any of my photo friends are about do get in touch would be good to shoot the breeze over a pint or a coffee. Even shoot some pictures. THE TRAVELLER - my new bookwork from Dewi Lewis Publishing UK

Dewi Lewis Publishing will be presenting my new bookwork THE TRAVELLER at Photo London next week. I will be in London for a book signing, 3.30 pm, Thursday the 19th at Photo London.

Although constructed with mostly recent photographs, the idea behind THE TRAVELLER, deals with a period of 15 years or more in my life where my many journeys have taken me from the South Pacific through Asia to Paris, my European spiritual home. The book is part fiction, part autobiography and deals with the recurring themes of loss, and as the self portraits in the book attest, impermanence. THE TRAVELLER is a personal reflection of a world where strange connections occur. My photographs never offer answers, only questions to tempt the curious. Although a democratic and balanced view, it's an acerbic, wry response to the world in free-fall where nothing is certain. And perhaps too you will find
humor, affection, hope and unexpected beauty.

THE TRAVELLER is a 94 page book, 290 x 195 mm with 88 colour photographs.

Photographer Josephine Pryde nominated for Turner Prize 2016

 

Tate Britain has just announced the four artists who have been shortlisted for the Turner Prize 2016. The artists are: Michael Dean, Anthea Hamilton, Helen Marten and Josephine Pryde. The Turner Prize returns to Tate Britain with an exhibition of work by the four shortlisted artists opening on 27 September. The winner will be announced in December.

British photographer Josephine Pryde was nominated for the Turner on the strength of her 2015 solo exhibition 'lapses in Thinking By the person i Am' at the The Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco. Pryde, who was born and raised in London, is now the Professor of Contemporary Photography at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany. Pryde is one of the first artists working primarily in stills photography to be nominated for the prestigious prize which is one of the most coveted in the British arts scene.

The Wattis has this to say about Pryde's show:

Josephine Pryde presents a new body of commissioned work consisting of a large-scale interactive sculpture and a series of photographs.
Known primarily for her photographic work, Pryde has become a major figure in the recuperation of photography as a key critical discipline in the field of contemporary art. Pryde has developed a singular style of image making that responds to methods and ideas from, amongst other sources, advertising, fashion, and portrait photography. For this exhibition, a suite of photographs depicting hands touching or handing various objects and surfaces is shown alongside a fully functioning ride-on model train.

Photo London opens next week...

 

The second edition of Photo London, held at Somerset House, 19 - 22 May, brings together 80 of the world’s leading galleries in a public programme that includes exhibitions, installations, talks, lectures, book signings and screenings. There will be three major exhibitions: Don McCullin in association with Hamiltons; Sergey Chilikov in association with the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow and portraits by Craigie Horsfield from the collection of the Wilson Centre for Photography. Photo London’s commissions programme features installation by artist duo Walter & Zoniel and Martin Parr. The Magic Lantern Show, an exhibition of London street photography, will staged in the cavernous Deadhouse spaces beneath the Courtyard at Somerset House.

The 2016 talks programme is curated by William A. Ewing, the distinguished curator, writer and former Director of the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne and former Director of Exhibitions at the International Center of Photography, New York.   The programme includes artists, curators and writers on photography such as: Miles Aldridge, Quentin Bajac, Kate Bush, David Campany, Katy Grannan, Lois Greenfield, Francis Hodgson, Nadav Kander, Nick Knight, David Maisel, Don McCullin, Mary McCartney, Richard Misrach, Sandy Nairne, Cheryl Newman, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Martin Parr, Sophy Rickett, Alec Soth and Hannah Starkey.

Photo London - Dewi Lewis Publishing, Book Signings

 

British photobook publisher Dewi Lewis has announced a series of photobook signings at Photo London on Thursday of next week, May 19. My own new book-work The Traveller is included in the line-up, I will be there for the signing at 3.30pm. Jim Goldberg - Raised by Wolves bootleg re-issue

 

Often considered Goldberg’s seminal project, Raised by Wolves combines ten years of original photographs, text, and other illustrative elements (home movie stills, snapshots, drawings, diary entries, and images of discarded belongings) to document the lives of runaway teenagers in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The book quickly became a classic in the photobook canon and, thus, the original is essentially unavailable. In the spirit of Tweeky Dave, Goldberg is releasing a xeroxed bootleg copy of the book with a surprise annotation by the artist. At 9x12 inches, the same size as the original, the re-issue features 320 black and white pages, perfect bound, with a color softcover. The Raised by Wolves bootleg ships in mid-July and comes at a discounted price of $80 plus shipping if pre-ordered. You can order HERE now.

David Campany on FullBleed - Apocalypse Pictures

FullBleed is a YouTube channel that documents photographic culture from around the globe, telling the story of photographers and their pictures. Through a regular series of original short films stories are unearthed at the heart of photographers' projects.

Just uploaded in FullBleed's series Apocalypse Pictures, writer, curator and photographer David Campany selects what pictures he would save in the event of a global meltdown. Campany's list includes work by Man Ray, Jeff Wall, the image by Jason Evans used as album cover of Four Tet's There Is Love in You (2010), a photograph from a Hitchcock set and a shot from his own project made with Polly Braden.
