<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My new bookwork NOTHING EVENTUALLY from UK publisher Dewi Lewis will be released at Photo London this week.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Photographed in Tokyo on three visits over a 15 year period Nothing Eventually records the perplexing extremes that exist in this strange and complex mega city, a place that defies comprehension. The city speaks to the traveller in riddles, nothing is what it seems. Its complexity is baffling and full of contradictions. Village-like suburban streets sit quietly alongside the love hotels, the Pachinko parlours, the boy-girl meet up clubs, the Harajuku girls and the endless neon. Cultural cross-overs are the norm with Japanese tradition blending with the Tokyo Hello Kitty version of US teen Pop Culture. The aged shuffle on while youth push the extremes. The city seems all surface and one is left, on departure, feeling none-the-wiser. This leaves the western traveller feeling that despite the depth of the city’s unique Japanese culture there is an aura of impending doom where the brilliance and glitter of Tokyo’s veneer will inevitably lead to an unhappy ending.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Known for his evocative and unsettling images, Harvey Benge’s focus is on picture series realised through the photo-book. With over sixty titles to date, his work has been published in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and New Zealand. His photographs have also been shown in public and private galleries in the UK and throughout Europe as well as in New Zealand. Working in both Auckland and Paris, he explores the nature of reality, investigating the overlooked, the unseen and the insignificant in the First World’s urban environments. A particular interest is the notion of parallel lives, “While something is happening here, something else is happening over there.”

Part humorous…often he shows disturbing signs of differences, small anarchies… an urban dream at the edges of reality.” - Deichtorhallen, Hamburg.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">photo-eye has just announced pre-orders for Terri Weifenbach's new bookwork - Des Oiseaux, published by Editions Xavier Barral. The 8 x 10" book has 96 pages with 44 colour photographs. Terri's book is the third in a series on birds from Xavier Barral, with other titles from <i style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pentti Sammallahti and Bernard Plossu.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Terri Weifenbach has a fresh and authentic voice with photographs that are both beautiful and charged with an existential sense of intrigue and mystery. On that score Des Oiseaux does not disappoint!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">photo-eye says this: Terri Weifenbach’s photographs present the secret world of nature, populated by birds. Created in the space of her personal garden, they reveal the life hidden in the tits, sparrows, and various passerines that nest in urban gardens. Oscillating between fantasy and reality, her images seem to be taken on the sly. They show stolen moments: suspended flights, birds dissimulated in the foliage, a loner gallantly perched on a branch, but also aerial ballets of linnets and chases between jays and thrushes. Most often taken at ground level, nose in the grass with the lens lost among the flowers, her photographs appear to substitute the ornithologist’s enthralled eye as it observes another world: that of birds.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The seasons follow in succession; the colours of the garden vary, passing from oranges, to the bright blues and greens of summer, to the immaculate white of winter. Saturated light and colour, plays on blurred and crystal-clear details, and freeze frames depict a “supra-reality”. Terri Weifenbach immerses us in the infinitely small, transporting us into a particularly lively world in which birds race at top speed, dance, or settle, freeze, and gather in parliaments. She reveals the marvels of their world.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Terri Weifenbach was born in New York, and has lived in New Mexico and California before moving to Washington DC. The creation of books, which she designs herself, plays a major role in her photographic practice. She has published many books, including In Yours Dreams, Between Maple and Chestnut and Gift, coproduced with Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi. Her work is regularly presented in international museums and institutions in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now opened last week at the Guggenheim NYC. The exhibition is split into two iterations - the first running until<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> July 10, 2019 and the second, July 24, 2019 until January 5, 2020.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Guggenheim says this: In the thirty years since his death, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) has become a cultural icon. One of the most critically acclaimed and controversial American artists of the late twentieth century, Mapplethorpe is widely known for daring imagery that deliberately transgresses social mores, and for the censorship debates that transpired around his work in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Yet the driving force behind his artistic ethos was an obsession with perfection that he bought to bear on his approach to each of his subjects.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 1993, the Guggenheim received a generous gift of approximately two hundred photographs and unique objects from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, initiating the museum’s photography collection. Today, the Guggenheim celebrates the sustained legacy of the artist’s work with a yearlong exhibition program conceived in two sequential parts and presented in the museum’s Mapplethorpe Gallery on Tower Level 4.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The first part of Implicit Tensions (January 25–July 10, 2019) features highlights from the Guggenheim’s in-depth Mapplethorpe holdings, including early Polaroids, collages, and mixed-media constructions; iconic, classicizing photographs of male and female nudes; floral still lifes; portraits of artists, celebrities, and acquaintances; explicit depictions of New York’s underground S&M scene; and searingly honest self-portraits.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The second part of Implicit Tensions (July 24, 2019–January 5, 2020) will address Mapplethorpe’s complex legacy in the field of contemporary art. A focused selection of his photographs will be on view alongside works by artists in the Guggenheim’s collection, including Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, Zanele Muholi, Catherine Opie, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This exhibition is organized by Lauren Hinkson, Associate Curator, Collections, and Susan Thompson, Associate Curator, with Levi Prombaum, Curatorial Assistant, Collections.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Robert Mapplethorpe was born November 4, 1946, in Floral Park, New York. He left home in 1962 and enrolled at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, in 1963, where he studied painting and sculpture and received his B.F.A. in 1970. During this time, he met artist, poet, and musician Patti Smith. She encouraged his work and posed for numerous portraits when they lived together in Brooklyn and in the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan, a gathering place for artists, writers, and musicians in the early 1970s.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> It was not Mapplethorpe’s original intention to be a photographer, and from 1970 to 1974, he mainly made assemblage constructions that incorporate images of men from pornographic magazines with found objects and painting. In order to create his own images for these collages, Mapplethorpe turned to photography, initially using a Polaroid SX-70 camera. Interested in portraiture, Mapplethorpe worked as a staff photographer for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. He also produced album covers for Smith and the group Television, and at the same time photographed socialites and celebrities such as John Paul Getty III and Carolina Herrera.
T
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Two of Mapplethorpe’s friends were influential in his continuing exploration of photography as a means of art making. He met John McKendry, Curator of Prints and Photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 1971. The curator bought Mapplethorpe his first camera and persuaded him to take up photography full-time. Mapplethorpe traveled to Europe for the first time with McKendry, where he was introduced to many of the collectors who later became sitters for portraits. Curator and photography collector Sam Wagstaff, whom he met in 1972, became Mapplethorpe’s friend and eventual lover, encouraging the photographer’s development, gallery associations, and career course. They remained close until Wagstaff’s death in 1986.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mapplethorpe had his first substantial shows in 1977, both in New York: an exhibition of photographs of flowers at the Holly Solomon Gallery and one of male nudes and sadomasochistic imagery at the Kitchen. Mapplethorpe’s diverse work—homoerotic images, floral still lifes, pictures of children, commissioned portraits, mixed-media sculpture—is united by the constancy of his approach and technique. The surfaces of his prints offer a seemingly endless gradation of blacks and whites, shadow and light, and regardless of subject, his images are both elegant and provocative. In the mid-to-late 1980s, returning to the sculptural use of photography seen in his early assemblages, Mapplethorpe created sensual diptychs and triptychs of photographs printed on fabric and luxurious cloth panels. In 1988, four major exhibitions of his work were organized: by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Mapplethorpe died due to complications from AIDS on March 9, 1989, in Boston.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Institute of Contemporary Art’s retrospective continued to travel after Mapplethorpe’s death. Although the exhibition had sparked no controversy at its first two venues, the threat of right-wing objections to the photographs of S/M and homoerotic acts prompted officials at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., to cancel the show two weeks before its scheduled opening. The exhibition instead traveled to the Washington Project for the Arts, Washington, D.C., where it received record attendance.Harvey's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09700272124137461541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5615873733567274970.post-69817763024271447312019-01-27T06:50:00.000+13:002019-01-27T06:50:00.978+13:00BLOW Photo, Photobook programme
<i style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Since 2010 BLOW Photo has been sharing fine art photography through our large format publication: BLOW Photo Magazine. After publishing 17 issues with work by over 300 photographers, we think we have managed to face every single challenge of publishing and printing.
The Photo Book Programme: FUSE It is an amazing opportunity for the artist to collaborate with an editor, a publisher, a designer and a printer. Together with Read That Image, PlusPrint, Unthink Designers and Dewi Lewis we would like to empower a photographer with knowledge and confidence to spark the change between where they are now and where they want to be by giving them a real insight into what it takes to get published.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Jeffrey Stockbridge is a photographer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His documentary
photography series and self-published book, Kensington Blues, which was released in 2017 has received wide international recognition. And rightly so.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Kensington Blues is a heart-felt confrontational body of work which you can't turn away from. The pictures are superbly seen and crafted with an amazing use of light and a colour palette that is just right for the job. And the chilling portraits are simply stunning. Clearly this series has been a labour of love for Stockbridge, made with persistent hard work over many years and a conviction that this was a story that had to be told.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stockbridge says this about Kensington Blues - "Kensington Blues is a portrait photography project of the down and out
residents who live
along Kensington Avenue in North Philadelphia. During the nineteenth
century, Kensington was a strong working-class neighbou<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">rhood, a national
leader of the textile industry and home to a diverse population of
immigrants. Like many rust belt cities, industrial restructuring of the
mid twentieth century lead to a sharp economic decline including high
unemployment and a significant population loss.

Today, Kensington Avenue is infamous for drug abuse and prostitution.
The Ave runs 3 miles
through what is now a dangerous and crime-ridden neighbourhood. Women,
some as young as
twenty years old, and others who’ve been on the Ave for decades,
populate the neighbourhood in great numbers. Prostitution has become a
social norm. Drugs such as Heroin, Meth, Crack and Xanax are sold out in
the open. Addicts sell clean needles for a dollar a piece. Five needles
equals a bag of dope.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With the roaring El train overhead, Kensington Avenue is in a state of
perpetual hustle. Working with a 4×5 camera, I chose a slow photographic
process in order to literally slow down the rapid speed of life as it
happens along the Ave. The focus of my work is portraiture. I want to
tap into the state of mind of those who are struggling to survive their
addiction. I ask those I photograph to share their stories so that
others may learn from them. I record the audio conversations or ask
participants to write their thoughts in my journal. The goal of my work
is to enable people to relate to one-another in a fundamentally human
way, in spite of stereotypes and commonly perceived differences. The
truth is, addiction can happen to anyone.

In 2017, over 70,000 people died of drug overdose in the United States,
approx. half of which were due to Fentanyl. That’s 191 deaths a day. In
my home town of Philadelphia, over 1200 people died from overdose in
2017. As a citizen, I am deeply concerned that not enough is being done
to help those suffering from substance use disorders.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The work I’ve been doing in Kensington over the past 10 years is in a way
a collaboration
between myself and those I photograph. Together, through photography,
audio recordings,
journal entries and videos, we are working to highlight the voices and
stories of those who suffer from substance use disorders. By sharing the
intimate details of their plight, those I photograph are effectively
humanising addiction and challenging the stigma that all drug addicts
are morally corrupt."
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dieter Neubert and his team are pleased to announce the 2019 10th KASSEL DUMMY AWARD. Again this year invitations go to photographers worldwide to take part and to send them their unpublished photobook mock-up for the KASSEL DUMMY AWARD contest. In the first round, the best 50 books will be shortlisted by a jury at the end of April 2019. These books will be exhibited at several international photo events. From the shortlisted titles, 3 winners will be chosen by an international jury during Photo España in Madrid in June 2019. In cooperation with the Fotobookfestival Kassel, the book that wins will be produced and published by our new festival cooperation partner MAS, the leading Turkish photobook printing and binding house from Istanbul. There is a charge of 36 € per entry and book, with options for sending back the books entered. Entries must be submitted by by 24 April 2019!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Fotobookfestival Kassel is a charitable foundation that has been engaged with the artistic medium of the photobook and has presented it in all its facets, since 2008, in a festival program of international standing. The annual festival shows works by renowned artists and promotes established and emerging talents, publishers, designers, printers, curators and booksellers on an international platform. It was the first festival of its kind dedicated to the photographic book and has founded two novel book awards: The KASSEL DUMMY AWARD for the best photobook mock-up of the year has awarded emerging talents a complete photobook-production since 2010; the KASSEL PHOTOBOOK AWARD assembles the best photobooks of the previous year nominated by international experts in the field. Books entered for both awards are showcased regularly in travelling exhibitions at international festivals and photography events. These two awards are unique in their formats and have been role models for other international festivals and events.
Based on the commitment of the founders of the Kasseler Fotoforum e.V., the Kassel based photographers Michael Wiedemann, Thomas Wiegand and Dieter Neubert, within 10 years a small local initiative has developed into an unequalled institution that receives widespread acclaim. The festival has been managed by Dieter Neubert since 2010 as a non-profit, charitable organization (Kasseler Fotografie Festival gUG). It operates independently of commercial interests and is financed through its admission fees, book sales, and sponsoring, as well as by donations and contributions. The Fotobookfestival Kassel does not receive any regular public funding and pays the standard local rates for its festival venues. Besides its main festival location Kassel, the festival has also been held in cities like Paris (Le Bal) 2012, Beijing (Three Shadows Photography Arts Centre), 2016, Istanbul, Moscow and Lodz, 2017. The festival shows work by internationally distinguished photographers such as Daido Moriyama, David Goldblatt, Martin Parr, John Gossage, Susan Meiselas, Viviane Sassen, Paul Graham and Alec Soth, as well as artist talks, lectures, workshops, reviews, print- and book-exhibitions, special book-events and book markets.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Running until March 25, Zoe Leonard: Survey is the first large-scale overview of the artist’s work in an American museum. The exhibition at MOCA looks across Leonard’s career to highlight her engagement with a range of themes, including gender and sexuality, loss and mourning, migration, displacement, and the urban landscape. More than it focuses on any particular subject, however, Leonard’s work slowly and reflectively calibrates vision and form. Using repetition, subtle changes of perspective, and shifts of scale, Leonard draws viewers into an awareness of the meanings behind otherwise familiar images or objects. A counter-example to the speed and disposability of image culture today, Leonard’s photographs, sculptures, and installations ask the viewer to re-engage with how we see.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">New York based, Zoe Leonard (b. 1961) is among the most critically acclaimed artists of her generation. Over the past three decades, she has produced work in photography and sculpture that has been celebrated for its lyrical observations of daily life coupled with a rigorous, questioning attention to the politics and conditions of image making and display.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Leonard has exhibited widely since the late 1980s and her work has been included in a number of seminal exhibitions including Documenta IX and Documenta XII, and the 1993, 1997 and 2014 Whitney biennials. She has spent most of her adult life living in New York City, whose built environment has been the subject matter of much of her work such as sidewalks, storefronts, apartment buildings, chain link fences, graffiti, and boarded up windows. From her earliest aerial photographs to her images of museum displays, anatomical models, and fashion shows, much of Leonard's work reflects on the framing, classifying, and ordering of vision. She explains in a recent interview: "Rather than any one subject or genre (landscape, portrait, still life, etc), I was, and remain, interested in engaging a simultaneous questioning of both subject and vantage point, the relation between viewer and world — in short, subjectivity and how it informs our experience of the world."
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The ever inventive, not to mention ground-breaking, Paris based onestar press present a series of 31 new photographs from New York based artist Daniel Gordon.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">onestar says this: <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Objects as seen through the prism of Daniel Gordon’s lens are never as simple as they appear.
The NY based photographer teams with onestar press, presenting 31 new works in a series entitled Au Bon Marché, literally hand-picking a selection of his sculpted paper fruits, vegetables and objects and isolating each to highlight their singularly crafted details.
It is evident from first glance that these 31 new works go beyond photography with the artist’s ever constant triangulation of painting, collage and cut out; they are digitally sourced, printed, sculpted and analogue photographed before re-emerging as digitally composed images that are pigment printed and paired with watercolor stained wood frames.
From Cezanne, to Seurat and Matisse, Daniel Gordon emerges from his photographic practice with a new way of looking, removing the glass that separates a viewer from the photograph to define a new, unique tableau conceived as a whole also including the colored frames as components of the works.
The title of this new series Au Bon Marché was inspired by the artist's recent visit to Paris and the history of Le Bon Marché, one of the first modern department stores that was inaugurated in 1838.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Daniel Gordon is best known for producing large colour photographs that operate somewhere between collage and set-up photography. His work, as described by The New York Times, "Involves creating figurative tableaus from cut paper and cut-out images that Mr. Gordon then photographs. In addition, he seems motivated by a deeply felt obsession with the human body and the discomforts of having one." He has exhibited his work in solo exhibitions at Zach Feuer Gallery, Wallspace, and Leo Koenig, Inc., Projekte in New York City and Claudia Groeflin Gallery in Zürich, Switzerland. Gordon has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Saatchi Gallery in London, Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois, and he was included in MoMA PS1's Greater New York 2010. He is the author of Portrait Studio (onestar press, 2009) and Flying Pictures (powerHouse books, 2009).[10] His work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gordon was a guest lecturer at Sarah Lawrence College in 2009.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is still a chance to see BILL BRANDT VINTAGE WORKS which shows at Michael Hoppen's London Gallery until January 19.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bill Brandt [1904 - 1983] was a German born photographer who immigrated to the UK in 1933. Although he travelled throughout Europe he adopted Britain as his home and it was here that he produced his finest work. Known for his incisive depictions of the British, both high society and the working class, his distinctive, highly contrasting portraiture and landscapes were frequently shown in magazines such as Picture Post, Lilliput and Harper's Bazaar where he was a regular contributor. His early photojournalism work gave way to a more abstract vision as his career developed. Brandt's influence on the photography world started in the 1960's when he embarked on a journey to find a new visual language. By using a wide-angle lens often with a distorted foreground he was able to produce a series of remarkable graphic images of both interior and exterior nudes on the Sussex and Normandy coast. Brandt's signature photographic style of highly textural objects contrasted with the flattened perspective of the images created a uniquely oblique approach.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> In 1976 I learnt how to retouch a black and white photograph with a pencil, a magic marker and some beer. My teacher was none other than the photographer Bill Brandt who was a regular visitor to his friend John Hedgecoe who was head of department at the Royal College of Art. I was at the college and asked to bring some prints to a pub opposite the photography department in South Kensington. I will never forget Bill showing me how he retouched his prints using the simple items above. I have long been an admirer of his work.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And though I knew most of it well having bought most of Brandt's key books - Perspective of Nudes - Shadow of Lights - London in the Thirties, etc.. I was delighted and honoured to be given the opportunity to work within the Brandt archive and curate an exhibition of works that are maybe less well known. Within this time capsule, we found wonderful early prints and nudes, which highlighted Brandt's inquisitive mind and his energetic search for a new way of photographing these well-trodden subjects.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Brandt is one of the few British photographers whose work has been widely seen and collected around the world. His substantial shows at the V&A (2004) and at MoMA in NY (2013) cemented an already illustrious reputation as a fine art photographer and great documentarian. His street photographs of the industrial north of England, his sublime winter landscapes and his insightful studies of the English at Home placed a spotlight on a country that had produced few photographers of this calibre.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With this exhibition we will be offering some rare and beautiful vintage prints directly from Brandt's family collection. With this carefully selected body of work we are providing experienced collectors an opportunity to view photographs never previously offered for sale and at the same time giving new collectors the opportunity to acquire masterpieces which rarely come on to the market. - Michael Hoppen
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Icelandic photographer Bára Kristinsdóttir kindly sent me her bookwork <i style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It All Has a Story <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">which was self published last year in an edition of 300 copies. The book is in memory of Elias Guomundsson (1937 - 2017) and the pictures were made in the workshop of Nylon Coatings in the Icelandic district of Garðabær. The book is beautifully conceived and photographed, the reader is left with an overwhelming feeling of the impermanence of all things.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bára Kristinsdóttir says this: The pictures in the book are symbolic of a vanished world... The screw, the snagged, worn chair - all have a story. But who should tell them all? And where do the stories that are never told go?
Things we have around us but rarely give attention... We hardly see them, yet they have roles, they matter. And someone has built these things, with care... The person who has built them matters, and has a story. This story has to be told. Screw, snagged, worn chair. And the man.
It adds something to our life...thinking about all the people who have been sitting in the worn chair. And gradually, we realise that life is everywhere.
There is something really good about that thinking.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bára Kristinsdóttir studied photography in Gothenburg. She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Iceland and abroad including the Reykjavík Museum of Photography, Scandinavia House in New York and Frankfurt Kunstverein.
Bára has also worked regularly for the New York Times.
She is the founding member of the Association of Icelandic Contemporary Photographers, FÍSL.
Bára founded and has run Ramskram, which is an exhibition space for contemporary photography.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you happen to live in Paris or plan on visiting, there is still a chance to see the Gossage / Guidi show at SAGE Gallery. The show opened in November and runs until February 9.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sage says this: We are proud to present an important group of
vintage photographs by John Gossage and Guido
Guidi which is part of a 25 years dialogue between
the two friends.
As Guido claims, John Gossage and him are brothers
who, as neither of them know the language of the
other, speak only "photography". When you look at their work you immediately
understand why.
Their work is always about the importance of what
goes unnoticed, about what remain unseen until
they call your attention to it.
They both resonate with a rare emotional, esthetical
and poetical purity.
As Guido Guidi said : « The spirit lies in simplicity not rhetoric.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Last October in Denmark for the superb Aarhus Photobook festival (link <a href="http://photobookweek.org/" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">HERE)<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> I was able to have several extended conversations on the nature of photography with Gerry Badger. Gerry is probably the most informed writer and commentator on the medium I have ever come across. His views are stridently opinionated and not to be easily dismissed. Gerry divides photography practice into two opposing camps. On one hand authentic hard-won work coming from the artist's heart and head. And the other pretentious wow look at me, ego based, I want to be famous sort of work. Needles to say I'm with Gerry and go 100% with the authentic.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I came across a piece on Gerry Badger's website (you can go there HERE) which further develops this debate. In essence Gerry firmly supports documentary or straight photography. And I agree, for two reasons, First, there is more than enough magic and mystery in the world on our doorsteps, to keep all of us shooting for several lifetimes. Second, the contrived and the overly conceptual mostly seems to come pre-loaded with a goodly dose of ego and pretentious posturing. Don't get me wrong here, there is a lot of rubbish documentary work being made just as there is some worthy highly conceptual work.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In a preamble to a piece on Michael Schmidt's bookwork Waffenruhe Gerry expands on these thoughts:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For the serious photographer with a confirmed belief in the artistic worth of ‘straight’ photography – the so-called ‘poetic documentary’ mode – these are trying times. More than ever, most of the world seems to think that the simple photograph is not enough. The photographic artist who still stubbornly works within the broad tradition of Atget or Weston, even Frank or Friedlander, is deemed wilfully anachronistic, a member of a mutated, almost extinct species.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> The straight photographer certainly is an endangered species. Reviled either openly or covertly, and frequently passed over in favour of those utilising the medium for conspicuously more grandiose ends. These days, the straight photographer’s nominally modest, ‘unambitious’ tend to be swamped by the serried ranks of vainglorious photofabrications and moronic pieces of minimalist conceptualism masquerading as the ‘real thing.’ For example, in a recent exhibition shown in France and England, Another Objectivity, the work of the American ‘New Topographer’ Robert Adams – relatively smallscale, subtle, complex – looked like a fish out of water amidst the welter of overblown, vacuous variations on undergraduate themes that were purporting to make us ponder issues of ‘art’, ‘culture’, and ‘representation.’ Adams – unfashionably, daringly – seemed more concerned with life than with art.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Of course, I an deliberately oversimplifying the issue. I also wish that is were unnecessary to take such a reactionary tack, but I feel that a little revisionism is in order. An artist’ medium should not be the ground for value judgements and ideological conflict. The art, yes – the medium itself, no. Yet that is precisely what has happened, and what is happening with photography. Certain ideological applications of photographic processes, namely, where the primacy of the photograph is denigrated and challenged, are held to be superior to the documentary utilisation of the medium. The photo-hybrid – photopainting, photosculpture, the ubiquitous conceptual photo ‘piece’ – is seen as the only valid notional approach. There are signs of active discrimination against the straight photograph and the plainly veristic practice from both within and without the photographic enclave.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yet, so many of those seeking to ‘extend the boundaries of the medium’, and refute the ‘hegemony of the documentary’, are fooling themselves. Whether deliberately or unknowingly (often the latter I suspect), they would seek to deny photography’s salient strengths and replace them with a diluted academicism. Much of what they trot forth as shining examples of the medium’s cutting edge are simply tired old ideas (intellectually kosher ideas, to be sure) wrapped in glossy new packages and bound with accompanying rhetoric. Invariably – lots of rhetoric.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I write this rather bitter preamble by way of a new book by one of Germany’s leading photographer – Michael Schmidt. I have been cheered immensely by the appearance of Waffenruhe (Ceasefire), and hope that it might rekindle the spirit in any straight photographer whose faith might be waning. For Schmidt confirms that photography certainly can be enough, a medium rich in allusion, visual surprise, and narrative quality when utilised by an intelligent mind’s eye. Furthermore, Waffenruhe reiterates a fact that has long seemed blindingly apparent to the more discerning photographer, that photographs must be put together like words, or individual movie frames, in order to sing their full song. It advocates persuasively that the most effective form of presentation for the straight photograph is probably the book. A vessel for the poetically juxtaposed sequence of images, the book becomes the primary artwork, rather then the necessarily less concentrated row of prints on a gallery wall.Harvey's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09700272124137461541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5615873733567274970.post-71977223221649685612019-01-09T11:06:00.000+13:002019-01-09T11:06:31.196+13:005 Best Photobooks 2018 - my selection
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Given the prolific volume of photobooks published every year it's impossible to get an complete overview of what's out there. However here are five new books that struck me and now sit comfortably in my photobook library. If there is a factor common to each of these books it's on one level the authenticity of the approach, images made from heart and head. And secondly all firmly coming from a documentary tradition.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Paul Kooiker’s EGGS AND RARITIES is an“encyclopaedia of life” in 164 images. This ambitious but utopian project reads like a sampler of photographic genres: landscape, nude, still life, etc. To achieve this, Kooiker often uses clichés more reminiscent of the propaganda of tourist brochures or of religious and political rhetoric in the media.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">John Gossage LOOKING UP BEN JAMES. This is a book of photographs first and foremost, by an endlessly experimental photographer. He is essentially a street photographer, a flâneur with an emphasis upon the urban landscape, although that does not begin to describe the range or depth of his practice.
Gossage has developed into one of the most recognisable photographic voices over the years, and that can mean resorting – quite naturally, all artists do it – to a repertory of stylistic and contextual devices, that go to make up his distinctive voice. I know his work intimately, so I am very aware of his little strategies and visual foibles, but I can also say that, like a good jazz improviser, he is always trying to surprise himself, and come up with a picture that one has never quite seen before. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In Domesticated Land, Susan Lipper navigates an apocalyptic world poised between inertia and the end of mankind, somewhere in the California desert. Uncannily tranquil, the landscape offers a trans-historical litany of monuments, icons and signs from which the author and protagonist constructs a narrative interspersed with the words of historic and contemporary women. Putting female subjectivity into relief, Lipper obfuscates the romantic notion of the desert as a land of freedom and self-enlightenment. A lone snake, a dilapidated home, the remains of a cinematic stage set, the head of a fallen woman, a military base, barbed wire: such facts create fiction, and one that serves as an unnerving political admonition concerning the current state of America. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In a short but inspirational video, (go to it <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg6VTRjIXmk" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">HERE<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">) Martin Parr dispenses some solid advice to an unnamed group of students. Parr talks about the need for passion and obsession, how there is no place to hide in photography. The need to build connections with a subject. Finding ones voice and a unique visual language. Learning from others mistakes.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Parr notes that most things that happen in the world we miss. He reveals that most of what he takes is crap, (fuck, I thought it was only me). And that you have to take a lot of crap pictures to trawl through in order to get to something half decent. Then you have to learn to know the difference between the crap and the good. Pictures he says have to be powerful enough so that they can work on their own.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finally, Parr talks of the creative demise of photographers who used to be great but half got lazy and fall back on past achievements. He doesn't mention names. Mmmmmm let's think...
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Martin Parr is a chronicler of our age. In the face of the constantly growing flood of images released by the media, his photographs offer us the opportunity to see the world from his unique perspective.
At first glance, his photographs seem exaggerated or even grotesque. The motifs he chooses are strange, the colours are garish and the perspectives are unusual. Parr’s term for the overwhelming power of published images is “propaganda”. He counters this propaganda with his own chosen weapons: criticism, seduction and humour. As a result, his photographs are original and entertaining, accessible and understandable. But at the same time they show us in a penetrating way how we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value.
Leisure, consumption and communication are the concepts that this British photographer has been researching for several decades now on his worldwide travels. In the process, he examines national characteristics and international phenomena to find out how valid they are as symbols that will help future generations to understand our cultural peculiarities. Parr enables us to see things that have seemed familiar to us in a completely new way. In this way he creates his own image of society, which allows us to combine an analysis of the visible signs of globalisation with unusual visual experiences. In his photos, Parr juxtaposes specific images with universal ones without resolving the contradictions. Individual characteristics are accepted and eccentricities are treasured.
The themes Parr selects and his inimitable treatment of them set him apart as a photographer whose work involves the creation of extensive series. Part of his unusual strategy is to present and publish the same photos in the context of art photography, in exhibitions and in art books, as well as in the related fields of advertising and journalism. In this way, he transcends the traditional separation of the different types of photography. Thanks to this integrative approach, as well as his style and his choice of themes, he has long served as a model for the younger generation of photographers.
Martin Parr sensitises our subconscious – and once we’ve seen his photographs, we keep on discovering these images over and over again in our daily lives and recognising ourselves within them. The humour in these photographs makes us laugh at ourselves, with a sense of recognition and release.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sally Mann - A Thousand Crossings at The Getty Center.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For more than forty years, Sally Mann (American, born in 1951) has made experimental and hauntingly beautiful photographs that explore the overarching themes of existence: family, desire, mortality, memory, and nature’s indifference to the human condition. Her broad body of work is all bred of a place, the American South. A native of Lexington, Virginia, Mann has long examined the tension between her devotion to the region and her awareness of its fraught past. Her photographs pose provocative questions about identity, history, race, and spirituality. This exhibition considers how the legacy of the South—as both homeland and graveyard, refuge and battleground—has shaped the artist’s career and continues to inform the American experience.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The exhibition is organised by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts and <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">runs until February 10.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is an excellent an extensive overview of Sally Mann's practice on the The Getty site. This covers her early work photographing her her three children - Emmett, Jessie, and Virginia - at the family’s remote summer cabin in the Shenandoah Valley, in western Virginia. She primarily used a large 8 × 10 inch camera to convey the detail and texture of everyday life. The text concludes with commentary on the pictures Mann has made of her husband, Larry, since they met in 1969. In the early 2000s Mann began to document the transformations to his body caused by muscular dystrophy. She called this series Proud Flesh, a term for the scar tissue that forms over a horse’s wounds.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you happen to be in New York you've got until January 12 to catch Simon Roberts show Homeland at FLOWERS Chelsea space.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">FLOWERS say this: Flowers Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by British photographer Simon Roberts, bringing together works from his extended photographic surveys of Russia and Britain produced over a period of 15 years.
Simon Roberts is known for his major bodies of work, We English, Pierdom, and Merrie Albion, which together comprise one of the most significant contemporary photographic studies of Britain since the new color documentary of the 1980s. His earlier series Motherland remains one of the most extensive, comprehensive photographic accounts of Russia by a Western photographer. Presented together in this exhibition, Homeland explores Roberts’ critical reflection on the relationship between contemporary national identity and place, and his ongoing investigation of what draws people together within a particular landscape.
Between 2004 and 2005 Roberts traveled to more than 200 locations across Russia to produce the book Motherland (2007), an exploration of the relationship between landscape and Russian identity. His photographic studies explored ideas of Russia’s ‘modest beauty’* and presented a diverse view of the vast country, encapsulating the optimism and national pride derived from the Russian sense of place.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On his return to Britain, Roberts began to examine the British relationship to the idea of homeland, which he came to define as a sense of longing sustained by “a range of archetypal images held in the mind”. The resulting photographs, which were produced over a decade (2007-2017), adopt a historical, rather than fleeting, gaze. Exploring social practices and customs linked to the British landscape, as well as some of the economic and political theater that has helped define recent history, his large-scale photographs reflect on the nature of shared histories and communal experiences.
Critically conflating the traditional genre of landscape with social documentary, Roberts typically positions the camera at a deliberate distance and elevation from the most obvious scenic viewpoint, focusing instead on the sidelines or peripheral spaces, rewarding the viewer’s closer scrutiny of the scene with subtle actions and gestures taking place off-center. Paradoxically theatrical and ordinary, Roberts’ images reach beyond the news headlines relating to ‘how we are’ in our present societies and excavate the breadth of diverse individual experience making up a national identity.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">— I was talking to a friend about a scene in Full Metal Jacket and
he said “that is my favourite war movie”. Later, I thought, what does
that mean? What does a favourite war movie satisfy? What makes it so
desirable? All narrative cinema pivots on the transformation of a
protagonist and so most war movies satisfy this requirement in spades.
From An Officer and a Gentleman to Platoon, the young
soldier is transformed into a man, either ruined by brutality or recused
by structure, there is a simple pleasure in watching someone (other
than oneself) abused into a potential killing machine.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">— A short while ago, my son-law Vhannes Koujanian and my daughter
Sophie came to visit us on a too rare occasion. Early in their visit I
was telling Vhannes about my habit over many years of getting up early
to avoid the morning rush hour on my way to teach at Cooper Union in New
York and about getting dressed in the dark to avoid waking up my wife
Kate. I bragged that in fact, though long retired, I still do get
dressed before sun-up!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">— I am very fond of my sketchbooks that I began in the 50s and still
work on today. I think there is a certain freedom when you are absorbed
in painting a sketchbook. You are not burdened to do something
important. You are not dealing in big things. You are just thinking and
the sketchbooks are a way to express your thinking. They are very
intimate. I work on my sketchbooks almost every day. If I had to choose
what I value the most in my work I might choose my sketchbooks. Here are
two of my favorite sketchbooks. There are four here which are just
covers titled, My Father and I. The other is Sketchbook #1
which I hope to publish as a book one day. Some of my sketchbooks will
be on display at my show at the Deichtorhallen House of Photography,
Hamburg in February 2012.
This show <span style="background-color: white; color: #1d1e1c; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; vertical-align: inherit;">is the first major exhibition of JR's work within a French institution. <span style="background-color: white; color: #1d1e1c; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; vertical-align: inherit;">It brings together the artist's first photographs, monumental format collages of his biggest projects, and several new installations.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
The exhibit showcases many projects, inviting visitors to lose themselves into JR's creative process, by retracing his first shots when he followed a group of graffiti artists in Paris in the early 2000s, as well as his first pastings. The show also goes back on his major series: Portrait of a Generation (an illegal pasting exhibition of portraits taken with a 28 mm lens); Women Are Heroes (that pays tribute to those who play an essential role in society but who are the primary victims of wars and conflicts); The Wrinkles of the City (a world scale project presented in various cities around the world where 'wrinkles', human as well as architectural, can be found) ; Unframed (in which JR reinterprets works by other photographers, giving them a new meaning by taking them out of their original context). The exhibit unveils for the first time in Europe an interactive mural about guns in America. In all, JR filmed and photographed 245 people - hunters and activists, teachers and police officers, parents and children - to create this mural for TIME's November 5, 2018, cover. Visitors are able to discover the mural in a unique way thanks to an online platform especially developed for the event.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The exhibition is showing currently and finishes February 10.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As noteworthy is the 2017 film where 89 year old Agnes Varda<span style="background-color: white; color: #0a0a0a; font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="background-color: white; color: #0a0a0a; font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">collaborated with 34 year old JR on a remarkable new documentary titled Faces Places. In the film they journey from one rural French village to another, meeting people, taking photographs, and printing the images super large-scale to be placed grandly within the environments they encountered. Following a screening of Faces Places at the 55th New York Film Festival, the two artist friends discussed their unique project and the wise and wonderful film that came out of it. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Recently I had the pleasure of meeting French photographer Julia De Cooker who was in Auckland looking for a lab to process a mountain of film she had shot while traveling to NZ through the Pacific. Julia kindly gave me a copy of her bookwork <i style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">An Artificial Life<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> published by Kehrer in 2017. The work is really good. Julia has a quiet sensibility and uncertainty that all the best artists have, she makes compelling images from the heart and the head. There is no, <i style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">wow I'm really clever look at me<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> here.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Julia was born in Paris in 1988 and graduated in Visual Communication/Photography
at ECAL, Lausanne, Switzerland in 2012. She is based in Paris.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Below is a selection of Julia's images from an An Artificial Life, I'm sure you will agree this is stand-out work. You can go to Julia's website HERE.
